About Junkyard Symphony
Junkyard Symphony strives to promote environmental health and awareness through educational and extraordinary entertainment by reusing old ordinary objects that would otherwise be sadly destined for the junkyard. But to Junkyard Symphony, however, these objects are terrific treasures that can be reused for an even greater purpose.... creating lots of big smiles. In the show, the performers are the conductors while the audience is the symphony so be prepared for a radical ride of rapid rhythms, awesome antics, clownish comedy, terrific tricks, magnificent magic, tons of talent, and plenty of participation!
Junkyard Symphony originated in Ottawa, Canada in 1992. Junkyard Symphony is an eco-entertainment company (eco standing for ecological and economical), that reuses junk to service all kinds of events for all ages. What do they do with all this junk? They do many things with junk but are best known for their Super Shows . They also teach Wonderful Workshops. They offer Radical Roving characters. They create Groovy Games by reusing junk materials and they also run a School of Drums and Percussion. On top of all that they have created several CD's using junk for instruments, and are presently working on a children's novel with a junk theme.
Their family style shows are perfect for community, schools, festivals and corporate events. They are suited to all ages and are as entertaining as they are educational. The shows are generally performed as a duo, but solo, trio or quartet shows are also available.
There are four show leaders, Junkyard Jonny, Junkyard Joe, Recycle Ross, and Recycle Rylan so several shows can occur at the same time. There are also various show versions and show lengths, to cater to the diferent themes and needs of the client.
Junkyard Symphony has performed thousands of shows over the years. They have also peformed in many countries around the globe such as Singapore, China, Britain, France, Macedonia, Croatia, U.S.A., and of course Canada. They have performed for important people such as the Prime Minister of Canada, the President of Singapore, The Governor of Jiangsu Province in China, and music celebrities such as the Tragically Hip, Sheryl Crow and Ziggy Marley. They have won first place in the Canadian Association of Exhibitions National Youth Talent Contest and they have been featured on many television programs such as CBC's JONOVISION, CTV's Home Grown Cafe and CTV's Regional Contact. Most of all they have spread smiles and their message to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rock to millions of people around the world.

Junkyard Symphony has four leaders. The primary leader is Junkyard Jonny. He can perform all shows listed in the menu of shows, but Junkyard Joe, Recycle Ross and Recycle Rylan are also quilified to perform many of the shows. The circus skills and comedy vary a little with each leader but the theme, length and price of the show stay the same. This way with a diffferent leader you can have the same show year after year and have some variation to it.

Junkyard Jonny and Trashcan Tony

Since Junkyard Symphony has four leaders, several shows can occur at the same time in different locations, so if Junkyard Jonny is busy, ask us if another leader is available.

Why is Junkyard Symphony a great show for your event?
It's full of rhythm, a language which everyone speaks and it has a great environmental message too. Recycling is always an important topic. Most of all we keep the audience involved all throughout the show. We are also extremely professional, very flexible, non offensive, yet totally entertaining and educational all at the same time. We can perform our show in English, French or Spanish, so have a look through our site and enjoy!

Awesome Alex and Seismic Sacha show off Junkyard Symphony's super cool robot Rumblebot. He is called Rumblebot because he has 200 ping pong balls inside his belly that rumble when a crank is turned. Rumblebot lights up and puts on a fantastic light show dancing performance at the end of every Giants of Junk show. The kids absolutely love him and get to come up and make him dance during the show. The Giants of Junk show features lots of things that are giant, such as giant juggling balls, a giant unicyle and giant drummers on stilts. It's a really fun show, with giant applause.

JYS had a fun time performing for l'Étoile filante at École Maurice-Lapointe as their gym was painted in JYS colours. A volunteer gets up to dance during and show off his amazing moves in Junkyard Symphony's Giants of Junk show. While often times the volunteers are children, Junkyard Symphony makes sure a few adults join in the fun at every show. One of the main points of Junkyard Symphony is to demonstrate that we are never too old to act silly, but we are silly to act old. The show can be done in French or English. In French it is called Géants de Ferraile.

As well as shows JYS is quite busy teaching workshops in Rhythm and Recycling. Throughout the workshop students always have a percussion instrument in hand such as rhythm sticks, shaker drums and bucket drums. Participants learn the importance of rhythm in music and life. In a drum circle fashion using reused materials for percussion instruments Junkyard Symphony teaches the basics of rhythm, such as tempo, beat, dynamics, quarter notes, eight notes, half notes, whole notes as well as syncopated rhythms. Add in a cheer box and a few rhythmic games and the workshop becomes a 'Stomp' for students.

It was a sunny day for playing games and watching a show. Junkyard Symphony brough out their Junkyard Jam, Roving Recyclers, Marble Mansion and Bottle Ball as seen in this picture. The point of Bottle Ball is to roll a marble in between bottles, trying to get the marble to the other end of the board. It's a fun game to play, as long as the bottles don't freeze!
