Description:
In the Rhythm and Recycling Workshop, participants learn the importance of rhythm in music and life. In a drum circle fashion using reused materials for percussion
instruments Junkyard Symphony teaches the basics of rhythm, such as tempo, beat, dynamics, quarter notes, eight notes, half notes, whole notes as well as syncopated rhythms. Add in a cheer box and a few rhythmic games and the workshop becomes a 'Stomp' for students. The importance of recycling and
the Four R's, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rock is covered as students learn how to have fun while helping the earth.

Workshop Details
Hour 1
0 to 10 mins:
Rhythm demonstration involving drumming, juggling, balancing and comedy antics.
10 mins to 20 mins:
Introduction of the workshop/ discussion of the definition of rhythm and how it relates to the
topic at hand (Everyday life, Music, Sports or Recycling).
20 mins to 30 mins:
Rhythm excercises with demonstrations by volunteers/ participants use sticks to follow along and learn about
beat.
30 mins to 40 mins:
Rhythm games/ participants use shaker drums to learn about
tempo.
40 mins to 50 mins:
Bucket drumming/ participants drum on buckets and learn about
note values.
50 mins to 60 mins:
Question period and solo drum presentations/ several participants ask questions about rhythm
and Junkyard Symphony/ they come up and do a rythmic demonstration on the JYS drums/ summary of the workshop.
Hour 2
0 to 10 mins:
Introduction to the second hour/ continued discussion of the definition of rhythm and how it relates to the
topic at hand (Everyday life, Music, Sports or Recycling).
10 mins to 20 mins:
Rhythm excercises with demonstrations by volunteers/ participants use shaker drums to follow along and learn about
rhythmic syncronization.
20 mins to 30 mins:
Rhythm excercises with demonstrations by volunteers/ participants use bucket drums to follow along and learn about
dynamics.
30 mins to 40 mins:
Rhythm games/ participants use shaker drums to learn about
beat and flow.
40 mins to 50 mins:
Bucket drumming/ participants drum on buckets and learn about
rudiments.
50 mins to 60 mins:
Question period and solo drum presentations/ several participants ask questions about rhythm
and Junkyard Symphony/ they come up and do a rythmic demonstration on the JYS drums/ summary of the second hour.

Introduction to the third hour/ continued discussion of the definition of rhythm and how it relates to the
topic at hand (Everyday life, Music, Sports or Recycling).
10 mins to 20 mins:
Rhythm excercises with demonstrations by volunteers/ participants use shaker drums to follow along and learn about
the science of sound.
20 mins to 30 mins:
Rhythm excercises with demonstrations by volunteers/ participants use bucket drums to follow along and learn about
song structure.
30 mins to 40 mins:
Rhythm games/ participants use shaker drums to learn about
memorization.
40 mins to 50 mins:
Bucket drumming/ participants drum on buckets and learn about
cooperation and stick passing.
50 mins to 60 mins:
Question period and solo drum presentations/ several participants ask questions about rhythm
and Junkyard Symphony/ they come up and do a rythmic demonstration on the JYS drums/ summary of the third hour.
